The
"Request for Comment 1" from 1969 stands for the beginning of the
Internet's huge success. At the same time, the RFC series documents the
stagnation in network evolvability and the selection process where
promising ideas were not followed up. Repeatedly, such concepts are
resurrecting with each new PhD generation. It is time to sort out the
achievements, to document better in retrospect some of the decisions
and to revisit pruned development branches of network architecture
design. Moreover, the past five years have shown a renewed interest in
network architecture research, which has lead to many "clean slate"
research projects. These, and all other architecture projects going on
worldwide, shall be put in context with 40 years of networking history
and the evolution of the Internet.
